1. Events:

- Leningrad was a target of Germany’s Operation Barbarossa


§ Expected Leningrad to fall quickly under constant bombardment

- Leningrad was under martial law before the German attack on the city
- Germans wanted to attack and occupy the city

o A lack of manpower prevent this o The Russians also showed their will in repelling the attacks
§ The result of these two conditions was the 900-day siege
o Within two weeks, Leningrad was completely surrounded and isolated from Russia by the Germans o Rations were incredibly low
§ Many resorted to hunting cats and dogs for food
§ Possibility of cannibalism § Frozen lake used to transport goods

- Life went on for many citizens

- The siege ended with the German retreat from Russia in 1944 after Russian troops broke through the front lines

· Commanded the city’s garrison
§ A. A. Zhdanov
· Head of local political party
· Gave city an inspirational speech calling into question their “Bolshevik qualities”

· City’s Executive
o Unfortunately the 3 men in power were arrested on Stalin’s orders
§ They were accused of acting alone without asking permission from Moscow
